The current version uses the Neighbor Discovery, NetBIOS, WinAPI and WMI methods, and only if all of them fail, the application reports that the MAC address is not detected. If an attempt to extract such an address fails, the application repeats the attempt using a different MAC detection mechanism. Multiple scan operations are performed in parallel to reduce the time required to scan large networks.ĭuring a network scan, the application detects PCs available within the selected workgroups, domains or IP range and tries to extract their MAC addresses. Alternatively, you can scan selected workgroups or domains, a range of IP addresses or a particular PC only. ![]() It allows scanning the entire network and detecting MAC addresses for every discovered PC. To extract MAC addresses from remote computers, you have to use specialized network utilities and EMCO MAC Address Scanner is one of them.ĮMCO MAC Address Scanner is a network application designed to extract MAC addresses from PCs located in a corporate network. Under Windows, you can find out the computer MAC address by using the standard ipconfig utility, but it can only work on a local PC. For example, you need to know the MAC address of the remote PC if you need to turn it on remotely using the Wake-on-LAN technology. While most network operations use an IP address to identify the target, some require a MAC address as well. Although the target system power state is the same between hybrid shutdown and hibernate (S4), Windows will only explicitly disable WOL when it's a hybrid shutdown transition, and not during a hibernate transition.'We still use S5 state because we know the system is off completely, maximum power saving (other than switching off at the plug!) and it’s always worked for us 100% for the last 10 years. As is well known, a MAC address is a unique serial number that identifies the network card and distinguishes it from all others. Therefore, WOL is supported only from sleep (S3), or when the user explicitly requests to enter hibernate (S4) state in Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10. This behavior removes the possibility of invalid wake-ups when an explicit shutdown is requested. ![]() Network adapters are explicitly not armed for WOL in these cases because users expect zero power consumption and battery drain in the shutdown state. In this scenario, WOL from S4 or S5 is unsupported. 'In Windows 8, 8.1 and Windows 10, the default shutdown behavior puts the system into the hybrid shutdown (also known as Fast Startup) state (S4), and all devices are put into D3. If you are still experiencing issues with WOL then let me know as I have created a doc that goes through specific settings to change.Īll my desktops just sleep, and my laptops don't WOL, so never noticed. It seemed as if it was a Ethernet driver issue but low and behold for us I managed to track it down to the fact that the hard disks needed to be converted from MBR to GPT partitions. I'm happy to ditch the software if we can get something else to work - but for now am stumped. So - there must be a way to force Windows to perform a 'hard shutdown' with the shutdown command. The software tries several methods - none work. The company don't seem to have any idea beyond the way we broadbast WOL packets. A hard shutdown - EMCO Wol works immediately.
